As for why the band name was changed, I was sure that "Supernova" wouldn't fly the second they announced it. It was only eight years or so ago that the band from the "Rock Star" TV show had to change its name from "Supernova" to "Rock Star Supernova" because another band had the name. The Santana/Shorter/Hancock combo didn't have any longstanding association with that name (aside from Shorter's album back in the late sixties having that title, which is nowhere close to a valid claim). I was actually surprised that they didn't already know that before they started throwing the "Supernova" name around (obviously it would have been a great name, referring not just to the Shorter album but also as a nod to Carlos' "Supernatural" career resurrection album).
As for Miller, Carlos had always said that Herbie and Wayne would be in charge of picking a bass player when the time came. Carlos threw out Esperanza Spalding's name, but he made it clear it was only a suggestion.
I was really looking forward to seeing what this combo would do. Sucks to see it fall apart if indeed that's what's happened.
