Shirley Bassey, Goldfinger (1964)
The Bond theme by which all others will be forever judged. It’s all about muscularity — John Barry’s sumptuous symphonic power and Shirley Bassey’s sassy, showboating vocals. There’s nothing subtle about either’s contribution — and thank heavens for that. Unlike many of those who’ve taken on the gig over the years, Dame Shirley then possessed a voice of quite remarkable potency and the lady from Tiger Bay, Cardiff, didn’t hold back. In all, she would soundtrack three Bonds, including Moonraker and the aforementioned Diamonds Are Forever , but this is her crowning glory. Fitting, really, for one of the best Bond movies of them all.
