My interest was long ago established where I recall in the `fifties` my Mum remonstrating with Dad at how he got excited whenever she was on TV and released records. I think she was a tad jealous. That memory stayed with me, and as years went by, I discovered for myself her shear presence, voice and singular beauty where she became my all-time favourite singer.
I created a `big band swing` Dance Theatre Restaurant many years ago where a DSB tribute singer, (I am told endorsed by Shirley), would appear regularly becoming an audience favourite due to her magnificent stage gowns, identical voice and presence of Shirley. Still touring as `The Girl from Tigerbay` and `James Bond` 1 night specials where as her associate, I attend all shows enjoying the presence of DSB.
At the theatres I notice most of the audience are aging or infirm. Covid not helping and I can see at some point in the next 10 years or so that `tributing` may well sadly become unviable. I did a mini survey on the last gig and asked quite a few people in a young person’s pub…… if they had ever known or heard of Shirley Bassey. As you would expect I was met with far more blank faces than I would have hoped for. I was gutted.
I would love to know of your experiences which brought you to become a Bassey follower. ?
Do you think DSB ever looks at what is being posted. ??
My kind regards
Michael.
