Re: Shirley Bassey songs – ranked!
Interesting choice of killed songs Erick and I like your approach - it’s all a matter of taste and like you - although a huge fan of this incredible talent - some songs - in my opinion have missed the mark. Personally I enjoyed most of your ‘kill’ list in concert - sung live - especially As If We Never Said Goodbye, With One Look, and I’m Still Here - all perfect for her. Seems to me it all went wrong on record - the recorded versions just not able to encapsulate the power of the voice or maybe just too under rehearsed - I feel as though the more she sings these songs live the more she embodies them and makes them her own. The Lloyd Webber album and The Hello Like Before album did not translate well. Both had great tracks and many of the songs sung live that I heard were fab but on record/cd something went wrong . But hundreds of fabulous songs have come our way thankfully. I thought her 70’s recordings with United Artistes were fabulous. And I did love her time with Colin Green - The Show Must Go On Album had some stunning tracks. On my kill list ‘Yesterday’ - my toes curl every time. But you know - I have been following this lady now for almost 50 years since I was 14 in 1976 when I discovered her quite by accident singing The Ballad of the Sad Young Men and after seeing her live more than 50 times and after all these years she still blows me away - she is quite simply the best with a very special gift. Nobody does it like her 😀Cheers Mike K
