I loved hearing her stories about her time on the road. She once had a close encounter with Elvis way back when he was just starting out in the mid-fifties. Back in those days, most large cities had their fairgrounds on the outskirts of town due to the large space needed for the set up. Consequently, there were no restaurants close by to feed the help so large food tents were operated to prepare and serve meals to the workforce.

She was eating dinner one night with a friend in Shreveport, LA, when Elvis, who was appearing in a show at the fair with several Country music acts and was unknown nationally, came in the food tent with a young woman. It was very crowded and he asked if she minded if they sat with her at her table. She didn't know who he was but could tell by the way he was dressed that he wasn't a regular carny. They made some small talk but the only thing she could recall was that he was very polite and raved about the collard greens.
