They were initially a combination of pym particles and ionic powers, which I think the Pym particles were used to jumpstart the ionic growth. My reason is that he eventually lost his ionic powers. In doing so, he lost all his ionic powers. He eventually regain the power to grow from Pym particles, but there were not any indication the particle were there. Otherwise he would have retain his ability to grow without that additional boost from ionic energy.
Nothing serious though just comics.

: Atlas growth powers were never ionic. See

: I believe Atlas growth powers were ionic.
: They were initially a combination of pym

: the Pym particles were used to jumpstart the
: ionic growth. My reason is that he
: eventually lost his ionic powers. In doing
: so, he lost all his powers. He eventually
: regain the power to grow from Pym, but there
: were not any indication the particle were
: still there.
:
: Busiek's explanation of Wonder Man not being
: made of ionic energy is kind of silly since
: he has Wonder Man dispersing and
: reintegrating from just energy. I don't
: think he is just energy however. I just
: think there isn't a good explanation.
:
: I read Avengers Two, but I don't recall the
: Mephisto explanation. I like it though.
: Crazy Eight was right before his big
: encounter with Mephisto so it make
: chronological sense. Still I wasn't too
: happy with Avengers Two, especially how it
: explained away Lotus. I think it took a lot
: away from her as a villainess, especially as
: the main villainess in that story.

: All those powers were given to him in the
: Wonder Man series. Remember that the
: growing powers Atlas has is due to the Pym
: particles and Nefaria used a variation on
: the Zemo treatment to get his powers.
: Busiek explained away those powers in the
: Avengers Two mini series as Mephisto's
: illusions. Furthermore, Busiek also
: explained that every ressurection of an
: ionic character might trigger a power
: mutation although in Wonder Man he only gave
: him the ability to fly without jetpacks and
: the ionic glow his body used to get but that
: Bendis has toned down.
:
: The Crazy Eight powers were given to them by
: another way different from the senior Zemo
: treatment, at that time Wonder Man's
: physique had been altered by the Nega-Bomb
: so he was kind of in a different state, then
: Wondy died in Force Works and later Wanda
: gets him back as a muscle and flesh guy
: ionically infused, supposedly getting him
: back to the way he was pre-nega-bomb but
: with the extra power of flight and the ionic
: glow.

:
: Ultimately, all that is up to the writer.
: If the latest writer wants Wonder Man to be
: the bastard child of Mephisto with the power
: to teletransport from one dimension to the
: next, that's what his powerset will be.

: I know there are fans that would like him to
: have an arsenal of super powers like
: Superman but to me physical strength by
: itself and nothing else is good enough.
:
: I'd rather he had to contend with wacky
: powers like eyebeams, energy projection etc
: from a villain, have to think creatively
: while being in a position of disadvantage
: than him being the arsenal of superpowers.
: Its always more heroic the guy that presents
: himself into battles virtually naked and
: ends up striping the other guy from his
: weapons and wining the battle.
:
: I think right now he is just a strong guy
: that can fly. I know Bendis did something
: with him reversing the ionic flow in Ultron
: but I think that was only controlling
: something that was already in Ultron.
:
: --Previous Message--
: I know he has eyebeams in the past, has been
: able to grow, and he used his ionic energy
: on Ultron in Mighty months back.
:
:
:
: Stan Lee was never one to make scientific
: sense of his characters' abilities -
: "ionic energy" is sort of a funny
: concept. Ions are atoms which have lost or
: gained an electron - they're matter, not
: energy.
:
: Filling in for Stan, I surmised that the ion
: in ionic energy has something to do with its
: effect. Busiek and Perez helped me further
: by giving Wondy a nice purple glow, which I
: fancy as perhaps ionization from the contact
: of said energy with the atmosphere.
:
: That aside, I started to postulate about the
: nature of ionic energy. It has given
: Wonderman, extended life span, superhuman
: strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes,
: and durability. Staying with canon ionic
: energy has also given Wondy the ability to
: grow, shoot eyebeams and control ionic
: energy.
:
: I think all these abilities are consequences
: of ionic energy. Most of these abilities
: are shared by frequent Avengers nemesis,
: Count Nefaria. Atlas used ionic energy to
: grow.
:
: You rather Wonder Man only have physical
: abilities, and that's fine. Let me excuse
: myself now because it doesn't end there for
: me. Other powers have been seen as a
: consequence of ionic energy. Losing control
: of his power Wonder Man transferred ionic
: energy to Crazy Eight, which resulted in
: this sample of wacky super powers:
:
: Super-sight,
: Astral project,
: Holographic imagery,
: Self-replication,
: Magnetic manipulation,
: Time travel,
: and a couple I can't remember.
:
: I hope you don't faint, but even this might
: just be the beginning. Even though the Crazy
: Eight lost their powers after Wondy absorbed
: it back into him - precedent for Bendis' use
: of ionic energy against Ultron - ionic
: I imagine that ionic energy has, perhaps
: indirectly, resulted in.
:
: Fabian Nicieza's Thunderbolt had two story
: lines in which Zemo manipulated that
: indirectly or directly responsible for
: empowering most of the Marvel Universe,
: bending the laws of physics and allowing the
: impossible. Once he stole all the powers.
: Afterwards he fought and empowered populace
: exposed to a power he was battling
: Grandmaster for possession. What those
: Thunderbolts story lines and Wonder Man have
: in common is the surname of the man Wonder
: Man's powers, Zemo.
:
: Did Helmut read his father's notes on ionic
: energy when he created his power draining
: contraptions in Thunderbolts? Is ionic
: energy this same energy? Maybe, but I hope
: not. I'm dying to call it the "No
: Prize" energy. No, rather I think
: ionic energy itself may be a consequence of
: this said energy.
