Arnold was shabbily treated in his lifetime and it seems that little has changed. Trying to list composers in some sort of putative order of greatness is pointless and impossible since personal preference always comes into it, but I can’t be the only one who would happily place Arnold above other much lauded British composers for the pleasure he brings, and his nine symphonies should surely be heard live far more often than they are; they alone entitle him to be called 'a great British composer'.

Hearing all the symphonies live and in sequence at the 2011 Malcolm Arnold Festival was an overwhelming experience
