It’s evident that some readers find it useful to see the timing of, say, a symphony. However, not all record labels provide total timings for works (though invariably they provide timings for individual tracks). We believe that most if not all other sources of reviews – both online and printed – don’t publish work timings. Furthermore, generally speaking, timings can be accessed easily either through the website of the label concerned or from retailers such as Presto Classical. We take the point that it can be useful for readers to know if a performance is particularly long or short in comparison with other performances of the same work. However, in our experience, our reviewers usually refer in their review to instances where the timing of the performance under consideration seems out of line compared with other versions.
