Wunderhorn"
The LP of this performance was my introduction to Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Of course I loved the performance, but the sound was distractingly awful. I remember a reviewer saying that the problem was Dolby noise reduction in the master tape gone awry. I have ordered a copy of the Nimbus CD reissue and hope it will be better. I also like the version by Christa Ludwig, Walter Berry, and Leonard Bernstein, though it is a bit rough and tumble. My favorite is the Charles Mackerras rendition with Thomas Allen and Ann Murray. Murray doesn't have the star-quality voice of Baker or Ludwig, but she sings with great sensitivity to the text and to nuances of phrasing. Her performance of "Wo die Schönen Trompeten Blasen" is slower than most and achingly poignant. The contrast between the opening military fanfares and the waltz-like lyrical sections is perfect.
