I had a number of the EMI discs of Wolf, Schumann etc with the same general group of singers (also von Otter, Bär etc) which were decent (faceless, as you say) but tossed years ago.
Reporting back: my copy of the Nimbus CD reiaaue of the Baker-Evans-Morris recording arrived today. The sound is much improved from my old LP (though my equipment has improved much since then as well). I now find the sound perfectly listenable, and this recording is now my favorite among the other versions I own: Ludwig-Berry-Bernstein, in both orchestral and piano accompaniments); Murray-Allen-Mackerras; Schwarzkopf-Fischer-Dieskau-Szell (which I keep around mainly for Szell's conducting); and the well-played, sung, and recorded but rather faceless version (with 4 soloists instead of 2) by Bonney-Fulgoni-Winbergh-and Goerne, Chailly conducting the Royal Concertgebouw. I used to have a CD reissue of the Forrester-Rehfuss-Prohaska and let it go because of the rather drab sound, but I see that High Definition Tape Transfers have waved their magic wand over that recording; the 30-second samples available on their site suggest that they've transformed it. Will obtain that sooner or later and report findings then.
