and I then immediately bought it. I find it to be as absolutely charming as it is unexpected. It features a favourite conductor - whose "Hänsel und Gretel" a similar work, and which Paul mentions, is equally recommendable, as per my survey - and some of the best voices of the era (1979). I have always liked Helen Donath, the under-rated Alexander Malta and Claes H Ahnsjö in particular - so it's a pity that the Knecht Ruprecht is weak. The interpolated narration bothers me far less than it does Paul. Sentimentality aside, it is a charming Christmas work, one to sit alongside "Amahl and the Night Visitors".
