Now, with this new series, I do not see Marvel performing a "bait and switch" or marginalizing Rich. I don't think they would bring him back just to screw with the fans. It would be to garner more fans. And the way to do that is to not marginalize either character. Finally, Sam/Nova was not burning up the numbers charts, so I do not see Marvel thinking "let's bring Rich back, but make Sam the star of the Champions and Nova."
I think Rich will be the star, and we will see a number of corpsmen.

: Very well said, Thanosrules!
:
: I'm approaching it the same way. I'm going
: to give it a fair shake. I think Marvel has
: given themselves an opportunity to have a
: good series. I sincerely hope they take
: advantage of it.
:
: Too many times, a legacy hero is given the
: mantle and thrown out on his/her own. I
: understand the thinking; allow the character
: to gain their own fan base and grow on their
: own. I'm thinking War Machine,
: Thunderstrike, Scarlet Spider and USAgent
: from Marvel and basically almost the entire
: DC Universe at some point or other.
:
: The biggest difference with Nova (and I
: think a source of frustration to a vast
: majority of us Rich Rider fans) was that
: Rich was taken off the board in spectacular
: fashion, Sam was created out of nowhere and
: Rich was just gone. The other characters I
: mentioned at least had their predecessors
: around in some shape or form.
:
: And now in the current Marvel universe, it
: seems to be standard practice to have two
: versions of a character around. And I think
: Marvel realized that two Novas made sense.
: That's why I hope Marvel is having Rich be
: the main point of story emphasis with Sam
: also appearing in the series as a hero
: wanting to learn to do the job better and
: learn from the best. And Sam appears to be a
: major character in the Champions series. My
: guess is Sam will be in the Earth based
: Champions stories and Rich will be focused
: on space based stories and training Sam to
: handle cosmic threats. Not all the time as
: I'd love to see Rich mostly in adventures on
: his own.
:
: Another reason I'm hopeful is the way Nova
: #10 and #11 were handled. I have no way of
: knowing this but it seems like there was an
: editorial decision to push the story in a
: certain direction to set up the new Nova
: series.
:
: Did #11 feel differently to anyone else or
: is it just me? The big thing I enjoyed was
: the fact that Rich's will power was strong
: enough to override the WorldMind's control.
: Not only did Rich have the mental and
: physical strength to contain the entire Nova
: Force on his own in Annihilation and DnA's
: series (which the WorldMind repeated said
: was dangerous and nearly unheard of for such
: a long period of time), now it seems he is
: able to mentally take control of the
: WorldMind itself by his own will.
:
: Plus, #10 and #11 seemed to focus on the
: theme that Sam is at a point where he feels
: he is over his head and needs help
: desperately to be a better Nova. For his own
: sake and for the sake of everyone he wants
: to protect.
:
: I have no idea if the new series will be
: good. I'm probably more cautious on this
: launch than I have been in the past. And
: part of that is I'm not familiar with
: Loveness and Perez as writers. The other
: part is that I didn't feel Sam was handled
: well throughout his two series. The rotating
: creative teams just never lent itself to
: stability. The character has potential and
: the Black Novas backstory has massive
: potential. But the potential was never fully
: realized.
:
: But with Rich's return, Sam's desire to earn
: and be more connected to the Nova Corps
: legacy, along with the Guardians of the
: Galaxy sequel featuring Sylvester Stallone
: as a Nova, I have high hopes (even though
: they are cautious ones) that Marvel will
: give this new Nova series some attention and
: decent marketing.

: Above all, I love Marvel Comics and while I
: think boycotts and fan-wars have a firm
: place when called for, the goal was to
: always get Rich back and to move onward
: reading Marvel comics again. The past is all
: real, and guys like TL are not wrong, but
: Rich is back.
:
: This was always about bringing back Richard
: Rider...so I think as fans, we seem like
: real irrational white noise if we hit this
: crazed panic button already. Already calling
: for a boycott without a lick of a notion
: what the hell the book is. It’s not
: reasonable.
:
: As a fan I recognize I don’t have creative
: control of a property, yet we do have a
: power and responsibility to provide feedback
: and action based on what we see. That is
: some power, and I think we should use it
: wisely. Sure, Marvel was unreasonable with
: us. Nova was a good book that deserved
: better. But that doesn’t change how I act.
:
: I always wanted Marvel to see my input,
: fandom, criticism as worthwhile and
: constructive even if we don’t see eye to
: eye. I wanted them to feel like there is a
: benefit to appeasing my opinions because
: they are fair, clear and based on logic. In
: turn, if they fix what is broken, I will
: sample the product and perhaps even a loyal
: regular buyer. Therefore, my buying habits
: are based on reason and logic.
:
: The consequences for not being like this are
: that we, that is Rich Rider fans or Cosmic
: fans, do really become that "internet
: white noise". We have to keep
: credibility.
:
: I think it’s clear Richard Rider is
: back...I'm happy, grateful and excited to
: see what comes next. Did I mention wary?
: Because I’m certainly that too. Still, many
: of the theories that surrounding his status
: and who will have more page time in this new
: book are NOT based on much actual proof or
: facts other than the concession that Marvel
: is still (mostly) screwed up everywhere
: else.
:
: I’m not sure where things changed and we
: needed Sam Alexander to be killed off as
: well. This was about Rich. I’m open to new
: things as well…Annihilation and Giffen’s
: stuff was new things. The New Warriors were
: new things….etc..
: Let’s just take a refresher on a couple
: simple points:
:
: Annihilation happened in a real down point
: for me in Marvel lore. I hated Civil War,
: thought the whole line was shot and despised
: the crude antics of then EiC Joe Quesada.
: Starlin leaves Marvel in anger. Then I see
: Nova used in the dreadful Skottie Young
: stuff…the New Warriors killed off….horrid.
: Right away the Nova series is written by
: “unremarkable” journeymen comic writers who
: came from DC…and there was weird stuff right
: away. Scott Kollins art looked weird,
: Richard Rider was being treated like a
: cherry newbie, they brought back Xandar
: again? They kill off Quasar! But yeah…that
: worked out.
: Not to mention RR during during Fabnic
: (“PC”)
:
: New Warriors book…calling him “Kid Nova”,
: dreadful costumes each week, ham fisting
: some excuse where he still had his powers,
: and basically running around and avoiding
: any tie in to Wolfman Nova Volume 1
: storylines for years. Recall how long it was
: till they even went into Xandar and the
: Corps.
:
: Then there was Sam. I was receptive to check
: it out. Frankly, there was a lot that looked
: good right away. I mean remember how they
: tricked us with Diamondhead and Terrax?
: Turns out, it stunk. The crowd screaming for
: boycotts and rejections like TL were
: right…however I don’t regret for one instant
: that I held a wait and see attitude and at
: least tried it out. I don’t have any regrets
: about coming to the same conclusion
: reasonably.
:
: Loveness has written like nine total comic
: books before. I think we owe him a look.
:
: I’m not saying this stuff will be good.
: Maybe it will all suck. Maybe TL will be
: right on again. But, above all, I am gonna
: stay true to my word and who I am. I’m going
: to properly review the work, give it a
: chance and see how it is. In other words;
: act reasonable.
:
: Fact is, I’m not an angry and sour guy, and
: I want to be happy and read goddamn solid
: comics. I am happy Rich’s back and we can
: all move on together.
