It was part of a suite of jewels, including a matching diadem. It was unusual in its design and relatively adventurous for the time. It had a certain barbaric splendour, as did so many of the Imperial jewels. Somewhere, there is a lovely portrait of Maria Feodorovna wearing the tiara, with a red dress, if I recall correctly.
