Maybe the stones were removed from it and sold years ago when money was tight, and the tiara frame stood empty all this time. Perhaps money was pledged by Marie Chantal to purchase new stones and refurbish the tiara.

: After Queen Ingrid's death, the first time I
: saw Queen Anne Marie wearing the beautiful
: Khedive Tiara, and it was assumed that she
: had inherited it, I remember thinking that
: most likely Queen Ingrid had left it to her
: because the greek Queen did not have an all
: diamond tiara of her own. She had the
: stunning emerald and rubis parures but not a
: more "neutral" tiara that could be
: worn with pearls or the aquamarines. In fact
: an all diamond tiara looks good with all
: type of gems necklaces or sets, but not the
: big emeralds nor the leaf rubis tiaras.
: Of course in those days we all assumed that
: the big diamond tiara of Queen Frederika had
    : been sold in exile.
: Fortunately it is still in the family, no
: matter what twists of fate hapenned to it in
: the past 45 years it has been hidden from
: public appearence. I am very glad for that!

: In my opinion the fantastic event of the
: reappearance of this gorgeous diamonds tiara
    : is not casual.
: I mean, I find hard to believe that the
: tiara was left lie in a vault in the
: possession of the Greek RF, considering as
: RF the King and Queen and their children.
: How many grand events there were in the past
: twenty years, during which the tiara could
: have been worn by the Queen of Greece, whom
: started to wear a diamonds only tiara just
: after the death of her mother, the late
: Queen Ingrid of Denmark, when apparently
: inherited the Khedivé diamonds tiara. Can
: you imagine, if they had that tiara at the
: moment of the grand wedding of TRH Prince
: Pavlos and Marie-Chantal in 1995, the Crown
: Princess would have looked much more regal
: than she already did in the diamonds and
: pearls corsage tiara. What is more, the
: diamond/pearls corsage tiara had no previous
: tradition as wedding tiara, while Queen
: Sophia's huge diamonds tiara was worn by the
: then Princess Frederica on her wedding day.
: IMO it was re-purchased recently by Princess
: Marie-Chantal, who has the means to do so,
: maybe bought from Princess Irene, who maybe
    : had inherited.
: It's not so important all this, the
: fantastic reality is tat we are all glad
: that this historic and imposing jewel made
    : its reappearance.
