Re: Badges First Class and Second Class, and returning badges Archived Message

I think I have read that some exceptions were made about returning badges.

Hugo Vickers in Royal Orders states -

Princess Alice was a VA, GCVO, GBE and GCStJ.
She received the Order of Victoria and Albert from her grandmother, Queen Victoria, in 1898, when she was 15.
George VI gave her the Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire at the time of his coronation in 1937, and made her a Dame Grand Cross of the Victorian Order in 1948.
These two Orders she wore according to the whim of the moment, regardless of the seniority of the latter.
Indeed the famous photograph taken of her by Lord Snowdon for her 95th birthday shows her adorned with the GBE and her Order of Victoria and Albert (of which she was the last survivor by nearly seven years).
The Princess was made a Dame of Justice of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in 1904, and promoted Dame Grand Cross in 1926.
She held two foreign Orders -
Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Christ (1918) Portugal
Dame Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (1945) France.

Edit: The first pic is from "Relatively Royal".

: Thanks to all those who provided info on the
    : V&A order. Fascinating stuff!
    :
: In Robert Golden's Relatively Royal (I think
: it's in Relatively Royal) there is a photo
: of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone
: wearing what is described as her mother's
: First Class Badge, but with the diamond
: crown removed. From all the information
: provided in this thread, it seems clear that
: holders of the order are expected to return
: their badge after death. If so, does anyone
: know why Princess Alice would be in the
: possession of her mother's badge, and why
: she would have been allowed to wear a First
: Class Badge (albeit altered), when she was
: only appointed to the Second Class of the
    : order?
