To Carlo, Interesting , when did Fabiola know the stones were fake ? She wore her Spanish tiara for her pre-wedding . She wore it a few time in its original frame et then nevermore ! --Previous Message-- : I just read the caption to the photograph I : posted earlier today in the book by : Christophe Vachaudez, "Bijoux des : reines et princesses de Belgique". It : reads"....The Queen is wearing the : diadem with a parure called : "Tunisian" set with diamonds, : rubies and green stones, which apparently is : a present from the King. : Concerning the green stones in the : "Spanish Gift" tiara, there is the : well known story about the nuns, who owned : it, before selling it. Apparently, in order : to raise money for the poors, before : deciding to sell the all tiara, they started : to sell the emeralds individually, and they : replaced them with paste. : When this was discovered, after the gift was : delivered to Queen Fabiola, in order to : repair the embarrassment, the Spanish : officials provided real stones for the : tiara. : I do not know whether or not to believe this : story, because really don't you think that : before presenting an official gift to a : Royal person or to any VIP, you have some : experts checking the object, especially if : it comes from a private purchase. Of course : if it came from an auction sale experts : would have checked it. : : --Previous Message-- : Uh oh. Perhaps I stand corrected. Lighting : DOES make a world of difference for colored : stones. Observe Queen Elizabeth The Queen : Mother here in the 'Those Were The Days' : thread. : Her emeralds look black too. : : : : http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/1345164667.html : : --Previous Message-- : I'm no gemologist, but try as I might I : can't : find any images online of emeralds with such : a dark hue. Even the poorest quality : emeralds I've seen in cheap stores here in : the USA have a lively green color. There IS : another photo we've seen on this board and : others where the Franco gift is worn in it's : crown configuration with very green, emerald : like stones. Likewise, there is an image of : her with very bright red ruby-like stones. : : I think these are onyx, jet or black coral? : Why not she already had aquamarine, ruby (?) : and emerald (?) stones to interchange. If I : were her, I would have acquired turquoise : and opal too! : : As for this green stone necklace, I like it. : It's very unique and I suspect it is not an : inexpensive piece. Perhaps one of those : lovely green stones surrounded by their : diamonds could be detached and worn as a : brooch. : : --Previous Message-- : Looking at the gift received by HM the Queen : Elizabeth II from the province British : Columbia, Canada, the jade necklace, I : thought to the one owned by Queen Fabiola of : Belgium. I read several times that they are : not emeralds, and in fact they do not look : like emeralds. : : Also in the book by Christophe Vachaudez, : concerning the stones of the tiara, he does : not confirm that they are emeralds (they are : very dark). : : : : : : : : : :
