No, actually ermine fur is very light and was often used for summer fur coats. The cut of Queen Mary's coat is quite unflattering, resulting in that stocky, heavy look, but there are examples of ermine capes from the 20's and 30's which fall like velvet - the capes of Queen Marie of Yugoslavia and Queen Marie José in Carlo's first post give an idea.
