Re: Girls of Great Britain bandeau base Archived Message

i'm not questionning he Queen's comment (I too saw the documentary) nor that the Queen didn't realize the two pieces go together until much after she received it as a present. I'm merely expressing puzzlement that it was only after Queen Mary death that the realization came.

I guess Nellie's got it right. After Queen Mary's death, her inventories became accessible. Possibly, it was only after reading these that someone put two and two together, and realized that the two pieces were part of a whole.

: I agree with you Boris and Nellie. The
: collection of jewels is so large and varied
: that it's natural that the two pieces were
: separated in storage and not linked
: together. I can just imagine someone in the
: jewel vault finding the bandeau base and
: thinking "does this piece go with
: something or is it by itself?"

: That the Queen herself did not link the two
: pieces is quite understandable I think.
: And I have never been clear about whether
: the band was part of the original gift to
    : Princess May.
: Perhaps the connection was made only when
: the Queen inherited Queen Mary's
    : photographic record of jewels.
    :
: I would love to see that record, and Queen
: Alexandra's, published by the Royal
    : Collection.

: But this is how she herself remembers and
: tells it in the remarkable video from the
    : sitting.
: As the two pieces were exhibited seperately,
: they were most likely given as two pieces
: and stored seperately as well.
: I believe it's most likely a case of royal
: jewelry watchers being more diligent than
: royal jewelry owners; in the course of the
: years, we have more than once come to the
: realization that a royal lady might actually
: knowe less about a piece which is at her
: disposal than some of the experts here who
: gather information about said piece.

: i am always perplexed when i hear that story
: of the Queen finding the bandeau in the
: stores after QUeen Mary's death. The press
: pictures of her wedding gifts shows a
: bandeau next to, but separate from, the
: Girls of Great Britain tiara. That bandeau
: has always been identified (or maybe assumed
: to be) the base of that tiara. Would The
: Queen simply have forgotten her wedding
: present and re-discovered it a few years
: later after her grandmother's death? Sounds
    : rather unlikely to me.
