Paisley - wouldn’t it be wonderful if the cockade featured in an exhibition of coronation jewels, marking the diamond anniversary of the Queen’s coronation! I’d love to see a detailed coverage of the jewels the Queens have worn to coronations since Queen Adelaide, or earlier if there are any to display of course, Three Queens Consort have worn the cockade, or part, for their coronations. Alexandra and Mary wore the three parts; Elizabeth (QM) wore only the central part. I believe Queen Victoria wore the central part for the 1859 Winterhalter portrait. Queen Elizabeth II has worn the central part in recent years. And I like to think that, originally, the cockade was a five- piece hat ornament made for the Prince Regent. That’s only a guess of course. A BP exhibition could include coronets, coronation gowns and robes too. I’m guessing that the Tower will probably have a special extra for more crowns, because I’ve read somewhere of a facsimile of an older crown being created. Perhaps we can hope for another big book from the Royal Collection - Coronation Jewels. Better start saving up again now!
