I want to clarify that there is a controversy on this subject:
I have understood that the decoration that wore the Prince Consort of Denmark is not the real one that he received on the part of the French government but a jewelled copy which he himself sent to develop.
If the Maltese asterisk resulting (the star of the order) is silverplated (my first impression!) it is then the "Grand officier" plaque and should be used in the right side of the jacket in accordance with the regulations of this order and if he use it on the other side it is a mistake.
In return if the resulting plaque is golden it would be the "Grand-croix" and therefore it should be used in the left side of the jacket...
