Most older ladies (catholics) I know wear gold strings with gold crosses hanging from them. I have a similar silver set that I like to wear sometimes. I find it very discret and elegant. Some ladies wear medallions with photos of loved ones, mostly already departed, or a saint they are particullary devoted to.

A recent event comes to my mind: an older lady friend of my family was recently assaulted in broad daylight when she was walking on a city street. The burgler ripped off her gold string from her neck. The lady was devastated, not because of the value of the gold string, but because she had a gold cross hanging from it, that had been a gift from her late only son... Eventually the cross fell on the street floor and was later recovered. My lady friend considered itīs recovery almost a miracle.

: In the case of Orthodox ladies, probably an
: icon worn close to the heart. For Catholic
: ladies ... a scapular? (not sure if ladies
: of that faith wear scapulars though)

: Queen Margrethe of Denmark is often seen
: wearing this so called string under her
: fabulous jewels on gala events (and I supose
: also on her daily life).

: I believe its a long thin gold string, and
: most likely has some pendant hanging from
: it, that is most dear to the wearer and is
: never taken off. Perhaps a very special
: gift, or inheritance, with much personal
    : significance.

    : Hi all,
    :
: I've always noticed when seeing these old
: royal photographs that the royal ladies
: sometime would wear a string around their
: neck beside their necklaces or chokers. I've
: always wondered what this string is for? I
: searched but couldn't find an answer. Does
: anyone know more about it? Thanks!!
