It is no obligation at all but always an option, that privilège. Your mother or your sister can perfectly wear white, yellow, blue, green or red in front of the Pope.
That royals seem to respect the old traditions is not too surprising, since all monarchies maintain their own traditions as well.
My expectation is that Princess Máxima will, for the first time, attend a papal investiture, most likely dressed in black with pearls. The same dresscode will be upheld by the Princess of Monaco and of Liechtenstein. The Queens of Spain, of Belgium and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg will appear in white, as usual. Undoubtedly also Marina Doria (the spouse of Prince Vittorio Emanuele) as a reïncarnation of Donna Corleone. In good company of President Kirchner, also a good stand-in for that role in The Godfather. (Just a joke).
