The sapphire was sold by King Michael and Queen Helen of Romania in the late fourties, apparently to jeweller Harry Winston.
Some years later the stone was bought by a Greek millionaire, who gave to Queen Frederica as a gift.
I am not sure that Queen Federica sold it in her lifetime, considering that the same rumor we heard about the huge diamonds tiara, and this is still in the family.
Maybe the sapphire remained in a safe for many years before King Constantine decided to sell it, as he did when he sold at an auction some of the precious objects he had retrieved from Tatoi. There was also a Fabergé egg which had belonged to King George I of Greece.
After all, we often spoke about the mistery around the Greek RF finances. There are rumors that a group of very rich Greek tycoons, together they allocate a sum to finance their former RF.
They are among the very few ex Royals who can keep their jewel collection, and they do not really need to sell to survive, like the Savoias or the Orléans.
