Because of the dispute between Greece and the UK over Cyprus, the Greek government did not want the Royal couple to pay the programmed visit. Queen Frederica wanted so much to go ahead and pay this visit and convinced King Paul to make his point with Mr. Karamanlis, the Prime Minister. There was a big row at the Royal Palace in Athens between the P.M. and King Paul, in the presence of Queen Federica, who was trying to say her opinion. Mr. Karamanlis was so angry that he shouted to the Queen something like: "Shut up woman, your place is in the kitchen!" Then Mr. Karamanlis resigned, a new P.M. was appointed and the state visit went ahead. In London there were a lot of protests and during the official engagements there were several riots between demonstrators against the Greek Royal Couple and the police.
