No more Grand State-Visits Archived Message

I am sure we will see less and less real fullblown State-Visits. Not only from/at the Dutch court but also at other courts/countries things have realy been tuned down. When was there a real State-Visit with all pomp etc. in Belgium or from the Belgian couple? Most State-Visits already only have one diner left. The counter-diner has been replaced by a cultural event but also we have seen daytime counter-luncheons or even no counter-event at all... The last State-Visits to Britain have seen no real counter-receptions. There are ofcourse also economical reasons for all of this but also: the world has changed a lot in the last few decades. It's almost anachronistic to see kings and Queens all dressed up for 2 nights in a row acting as if they are discussing matters of state and acting all important while it's only show... I think it's a great pitty but the time of the real big fullblown State-Visits is over. Britain and Sweden will continue to use carriages and mounted guards of honour as a relic from the past and as a sort of folklore. But in the Netherlands, that had the same tradition for many decades, it will never come back. Denmark will keep on going with all its scarlet court-uniforms and and although I personaly like that very much, I already heared in the Dutch media people make fun of the uniform the Danish Crownprince wore at the Dutch investiture: "Frederik in his operette-uniform" Spain has hardly any ceremonial left at State-Visits. State-Visits by presidents to other republics are nowadays already hardly a reason for pomp and circumstance. No, things are different, not only compared with the 1950's but also already compared to the 1980's or even 1990's we see a big difference in the show-aspect of monarchy. I would find it realy odd if Willem-Alexander and Maxima would go for a 3-day State-Visit to Britain with 3 tiara/white-tie events in a row as was still done in 1982 by Beatrix. And why ever would they go as the British Queen was not in Holland for an official State-Visit since 1958... The Belgian king is 20 years on the throne this year but has not made an official State-Visit to Britain (a neigbouring country!) in his entire reign, neither has the Elizabeth II been to Belgium for a State-Visit. I realy believe, Willem-Alexander and Maxima will not be making grand State-Visits as Beatrix did in the early years of her reign. Let it be clear: I find that very sad... But at the same time also understandable because the world has changed a lot in recent times.
