    Re: inheritance taxes Archived Message

The link (in Dutch) explores the differences between the Dutch and Belgian monarchy.

In the Netherlands inheritances and donations to the King are exempted from taxes because the bulk of these inheritances are used "for the execution of royal function".

In Belgium the King is not exempted from taxes. Queen Fabiola's closest blood-relatives (her Spanish nephews and nieces) will be faced with hefty taxes. The Duke of Brabant and his siblings wil face even higher taxes because there is no any consanguity at all between Philippe/Astrid/Laurent van België (de Belgique) and Fabiola de Mora y Aragón.

This was exactly the reason for the Queen to create foundations, perfectly legal and much used by fortuned Belgians. Sadly this is immediately attacked as 'tax evasion' and instead of making better taxation rules the Belgian politicans then attack easy target Fabiola.

: But Mathilde has also worn some of FAbiolas
: jeqwels like the big diamond waterfall
: broosh and recently in Amsertdam the
: earrings from the tunisian Set. So it seems
: she is closer to her then to Paola.
: A question about inheritance taxes. Has also
: the monarch to pay inheritance taxes in
: Belgium? If not she could leave all her
: Jewels to the Monarch which then would
    : probably be Philippe.

: Mathilde and Claire are ladies whom happen
    : to
: be married to sons from Fabiola's late
: husband's brother. With other words, there
: is no any blood relationship and at best a
    : remote in-law relationship.
    :
: This does not prevent Queen Fabiola to make
: arrangements for her jewels, if she wants.
: The relationship of the late Princess
: Lilian, Duchess of Halland, to Crown
: Princess Victoria of Sweden is even more
: distant (Victoria is a daughter to her late
: husband's nephew) and this did not prevent
: the transfer of beautiful jewels to her.
    :
: Sweden has the luck that there are no (or
: very moderate) succession taxes. In Belgium
: these taxes are hefty, for sure in a
: situation where there is no blood
: relationship. Queen Fabiola is busy with
: Foundations (and undeservedly criticized for
: that, she does nothing illegal) and we need
: to see how this all works out. Mathilde has
: nothing to 'win' with a bequest which cost
: her an enormous sum in succession taxes. The
: best hope is that Queen Fabiola will give
: jewels as a cadeau to the new Queen, but she
: could have done so to Queen Paola, her
    : sister-in-law, and never did.
