This all-diamond floral corsage brooch is described by Roberts as being “formed as a cluster of brilliant flowers and leaves, in cut-down open-back settings, partly pavé-set, suspending four detachable pear-shaped drops on rose-set chains”.[1] Who also attributes this piece to Garrard.[2]
This brooch belonged to the Duchess of Teck, and as Roberts argues, it is likely that this brooch was amongst the bequests from her aunt, Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester in 1857.[3] It was described in the inventory of the Duchess of Teck’s jewels made in 1882, as “a large Diamond flower pattern [Brooch]; with 4 Diamond scroll drops suspended by Diamond link chain”; and following her death in 1897 this brooch passed to Prince Adolphus of Teck.[4]
This brooch was later acquired by Queen Mary, who in turn, gave it to the Duke of York (later King George VI), in 1923 to give to “his bride” as a wedding present.[5] It was thus presented to Queen Elizabeth from her husband,[6] and it can be seen illustrated in The Times alongside the other wedding gifts.[7]
Queen Elizabeth wore this piece often, during both evening and daytime engagements, remaining a firm favourite throughout her life.[8] It was later bequeathed to The Queen upon the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2002, and has been worn occasionally since.[9]
