...and not over the clothes. This picture of Lady Sarah Chatto is again an example for this. And this particular three-strand (edit: four, of course) pearl necklace also lies better when worn directly on the skin and doesn't simply 'hang around oddly' as it seems when worn on fabric (when worn over the clothes, the clasp should be worn on the back, then it works again). That's why it looks much better on Princess Margaret Rose than on her daughter (at least in the pictures provided).
Pearls also keep their luster when worn directly on the skin. I remember a lovely story, told by Queen Margrethe II (was it in the amazing jewelery documentary?), that her mother, Queen Ingrid used to wear, what I believe to remember was the pearl necklace of the pearl-ruby-parure, in bed under her night gown. She did it, because the pearls had lost their luster and this treatment by The Queen did wonders to these ancient pearls .
