    the retail and 'cost' price of anything rarely marries up though does it. Consider the retailer who buys that tiara at auction, on top of the auction price there'll be tax, and auction house premiums. Consider too the investment of the retailer to hold something so valuable in stock, how quickly would a piece like this sell, are there buyers expressing interest already, how many tiara events are there for ladies these days, let alone Royal ladies... the insurance for the piece, the maintenance and adjustments that might be necessary.

    The Jewellery industry has always worked to such a high mark up for all these reasons and more....staff, secure premises, vaults, before even considering the additional investment on the part of the house to buy in such items. So I think you'll find the difference between auction price, and retail fairly consistent with other boutiques and Jewellery stores.
