I was wondering if "the King's jewels" expression has ever been used anywhere else, for an author to assert it that way in the introduction. It was completely new to me.

I have always understood that family jewels worn by a queen, regnant or consort, pass from one monarch to the next.
So, if I am right in that, Charles will inherit his mother's collection of personal jewels.

I have always understood the Crown Jewels to mean certain items that have been left to the crown, so to speak.

In The Queen's Diamonds Roberts used the expression "heirloom of the crown" which I think is better.
It can embrace the various circumstances in which those items are to stay with the reigning family line but are not personal property.

: Well this just goes to show how wikipedia can
: be edited by anyone and its information
    : isn't always reliable.
    :
: The site does explain that you might call
: the personal collection of the monarch the
: King's jewels when the monarch is male. But
: as we haven't had a male monarch for a good
: many years now (!) we always call them
    : Queen's jewels.
: Also during the reign of the George VI I am
: not aware that there was the distinction or
: categorisation of jewels into Crown jewels
    : or not.
    :
: I guess its something we may only find out
: for sure once Her Majesty has passed on and
    : Charles ascended the throne
