Re: Braganza jewels-engagement ring Archived Message

That’s funny how we remembered of different rings for the same purpose! That shows the lack of information around the Royal Family jewels. I agree with you: to give the ruby ring to D.Isabel was a lovely gesture and full of meaning.

The enamel ring was commissioned by the present Duke and we can see that by the number of diamonds and by the monogram. However I understand your confusion: the book refers to D.Duarte Pio as D.Duarte Nuno who was the present Duke’s father. It is a very common confusion but if in the past it was fun, now is just annoying.

I see that you know very well some of the Braganza jewels. It will be very interesting to read the stories that you have to tell about them and it will be an oportunity to show a little of the glamour of one of the oldest Royal Houses of Europe (even if now it is a very discrete one).

I was thinking to discuss each jewel in separated threads because one single topic can become very confusing.

: Yes, I believe the rubi ring was chosen as
: engagement ring for those reasons: being
: red, it was the House of Braganza colour,
: and the fact that had belonged to the Duke's
: mother and grandmother. It seems to me a
: very logical gesture, apart from beautiful
: and romantic, to give his beloved fiancéé a
: ring that had belonged to his late mother.
    :
: In fact the only time I saw the ring you
: posted mentioned was in the portuguese
: jewels book, there was no mention to it in
: the press at the time of the royal
: engagement/wedding. And I must say that in
: the book I was confused as to if it was not
: the engagement ring given by Dom Duarte Nuno
    : to Dona Maria Francisca...
    :
: It is wonderful that you have more pics of
: that book that can be posted! The book has
: several previously unknown jewels (like the
: Por Bem brooch you mentioned several threads
: bellow) but it doesn't mention other
: relevant jewels the Duchess has from the
: inheritance of the late Duchess like the
: fabulous aquamarine set, with similarity in
: size and design to the ones from QEII and
: the Luxembourg royal house. Unfortunately
: the Duchess only wore this set on rare
: ocasions and never in a foreign country.
    :
: Please do post the pics you have! I have
: some but I really don't know how to post
: them here. I also have a small listing of
: the Duchess jewels, the ones she has worn
: for some years. Perhaps I should wait to
: post it on your next thread on Braganza
: jewels in general (not just the ring I
    : mean)?

: That is indeed a beautiful picture of a true
: Lady I may add. I see the ring and it seems
: to have a quite big stone. So we started
: with an engagement ring and now we have two!
: Thank you for sharing that information: as
: told previously I had no idea there was
    : another ring.
: Now I just find strange that the enamel ring
: keeps being called engagement ring (even in
: publications that had consulted the Royal
    : House).
    :
: But a ruby ring also makes sense since the
: red (Bordeaux to be more precise) is
: allegedly the House of Braganza color.
    :
: It is also nice to see heirloom jewels
: especially when we know what happened to
: most of King Miguel pre-exile jewels. It is
: sad, however, that we do not have a clearer
    : picture.
    :
: Well, perhaps Prince Afonso will one day
: propose a young lady with that ruby ring.
    :
: The pre-wedding gala jewels are a very
: interesting set but I do not know much about
: them either. You are right: the book does
: not mention that set. But I have some
: pictures and we can discuss those jewels in
: another thread. What do you think?
