Thank you very much Johan for the details on the life and jewelry of this lady. She must have been a lovely lady since she was so much loved by her people and relatives. No clues on her godparents? I am still puzzled by her second name, as Maria da Glória is obviously not a traditional german name, its a portuguese name.

: Amalia Maria da Gloria Augusta of
: Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach was the daughter of
    : Charles Bernhard of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach
    : (a younger brother of Duke Charles-Edward
: who married grandduchess Maria Pavlovna) and
: his wife Ida of Saxony-Meiningen a sister of
    : Queen Adelaide of Great-Britain.
: Her father served in the Dutch army and she
: like her first cousin Charles-Alexander
: married into the Dutch royal family.
: Charles-Alexander married princess Sophie of
: the Netherlands, the youngest child and only
: daughter of king Willem II and Queen Anna
: Pavlovna. Amalia married their youngest son
: prince Hendrik the sailor of the
: Netherlands. After his brother became king
: Hendrik acted as stadholder for his brother
: in the Grandduchy of Luxembourg and Amalia
: was much loved there. Unfortunately the
: marriage of Hendrik and Amalia remained
: childless. After 19 years of marriage she
: died and was deeply mourned by her husband.
: In 1878 the prince felt compelled to remarry
: to avert the impending succession crisis
: with both sons of his brother the king not
: marrying and the king making plans to marry
    : morganatically. Hendrik married princess
: Maria of Prussia a sister of the Duchess of
: Connaught. A year later he died. His second
: marriage also remained childless so the
: saphires and diamonds he had inherited from
: his mother Anna Pavlovna to be the stars of
: his line returned to the main line of the
: house. Shortly after his death his nephew
: the Prince of Orange died and in the next
: four years the two remaining princes of the
: House of Orange (nephew Alexander and uncle
: Frederik) died as well leaving king Willem
: III with his four year old daughter from his
: second marriage as his heiress.

: A bit OT but could someone please provide
    : some
: indication as to why was this princess named
: Amália Maria da Glória? I could be
: completely mistaken but could she be a
: godchild of Queen Maria II of Portugal,
: whose name (one of many) was Maria da
    : Glória?
: Thanks in advance for any info.

: According royaldutchjewels the large bow
: brooch was made for Princess Amalia da
: Gloria of the Netherlands by using gemstones
: inherited by her spouse Prince Hendrik from
: his mother Queen Anna Paulovna of the
: Netherlands. You have another theory?

: Interesting how we are all dying to see
    : Maxima
: wear all the historical jewels and now she
: has unearthed one of them it's not ok.
    : Weird.
    :
: Maxima outranks Beatrix, it's as simple as
: that. Also, we might think that an
: unearthing of a jewel is a terribly
: important thing, for the royal ladies it is
: not. Maxima has first pick in the collection
: now and she chooses what to wear and what
: not, however she likes. Also, Beatrix'
: brooch is FAR more important (historically
: and financially) than the sapphire one
    : Maxima was wearing.
    :
: Slight correction (not to you, Marianne):
: there is no evidence or reason to believe
: this brooch was made for Prince Hendrik.
