    Some thoughts (edited) Archived Message

The parure shown by Brus shows many large sapphires in various shapes. We have discussed this before. Where did they all go?
Except for the (2) sapphires in the bow brooch now discussed I can't think of any other Jewels made after 1879 that contain large sapphires. The Sapphire bow brooch containing a massive oval sapphire was already worn by Queen Emma as early as 1878/9.
The Sapphire tiara and bracelets (made in 1881) apparently contain 'new' sapphires. The Jewels were ordered two years after Prince Hendrik died (1879) and thus the Sapphires were already in King Willem III's posession, or so I gather. The Wedding Gift Parure contains many smaller sized Sapphires and those were sourced by Vita Israel. That only leaves - possibly - the large oval sapphire set in diamonds that was worn (amongst others) by Queen Maxima on 30-4-2013. But some say it is actually the oval sapphire taken from Queen Emma's bow brooch. Questions, questions......

: Very interesting, Erik. Is this information
: based on the style of the brooch?
    :
: I always have doubted that the brooch was
: made for Princess Amalia since René Brus
: states that Amalia wore Queen Anna's parure
: while it only later was altered for Prince
: Hendrik's second wife Marie. Yet the drawing
: of Marie's parure which Brus adds (although
: with incorrect caption, I guess) shows a
: parure completely different from the
    : Orange-Nassau jewels. (Brus, pp. 74-78).
: Hendrik died one year later. So the sapphire
: jewels as we know them now were most likely
: all created for Emma and perhaps Wilhelmina.

: Indeed, it was made for Wilhelmina. But I
: don't know whether a jewel with this
: sapphire was broken up for this brooch, or
: was lying around in a box.
