According to Munn she particularly enjoyed remodelling her tiaras. Just think of her era of upright pearls and emeralds on top, then they disappeared. --Previous Message-- : How true! I've often imagined Queen Mary : sitting in the vast Windsor vault tinkering : away. I can only imagine how much fun she : must have had coming up with some of her : jeweled concoctions. : : --Previous Message-- : : Actually, I think the royal ladies of times : long past had too much time on their hands : and could play with their jewels and concoct : special arrangements, to send off to the : jewellers for making up for fancy dress : parties. : : : --Previous Message-- : I hadn't thought of that Nellie.....and it : makes total sense.....the versatility of : royal jewels never ceases to amaze me! : : --Previous Message-- : : I quite agree. The ends must have been : removed. : : : --Previous Message-- : I believe the other occasion that Queen Mary : wore the GOGB&I was at the Duchess of : Devonshire's costume ball in 1897. I can't : for the life of me figure out how she was : able to shrink it down to this size. I : would think that even closed completely in a : circle, that it's circumference would be : wider. : : : (photo courtesy of orderofsplendor blog) : : : --Previous Message-- : : Queen Mary did wear this tiara in a tight : formation at least twice and once described : as a crown. : : : : : --Previous Message-- : I too have wondered about that Nellie. How : that is achieved is intriguing. I recollect : Queen Silvia in speaking about the Swedish : sapphire tiara saying it could be used in : various open or less open configurations : and, from old photographs, I suspect many : others, including the Girls of Great Britain : tiara, have the same ability. : : : --Previous Message-- : : I was just comparing the two pics again and : have noted the gaps in the framework of the : tiara. : : The pic of the current shows marked gaps : whereas they are tightly closed in the : original. : : My guess is that the gaps allow for : flexibility of shape, to fit the head of the : wearer as comfortably as possible. : But, how does the frame stay together? What : is holding those major pieces of framework : together? : : : : : : : : : : : : :
