The piece has appeared in books from the Royal Collection with different descriptions. At 83.5 cm long that is a large belt.
--Previous Message-- : If you read it carefully it says that the : current setting is as a belt and that the : stones were previously used on his horses' : harness - which I take to mean in a : different setting. : : --Previous Message-- : I did not realize it was intended to be a : horse harness. What a pity because it looks : a nice jewel piece that could possibly be : altered into a wearable piece, but I guess : not after reading the link and your comment. : Thank you for the link to this jewel : piece, Nellie! : : --Previous Message-- : : The item is described in the Royal : Collection - : : : : : http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/11291/emerald-girdle-of-maharajah-sher-singh : : It 83.5 cm long and was part of harness for : a horse. : : I don't think it very likely the piece will : be broken up for wearing by a royal lady. : : --Previous Message-- : Recently, I borrowed a Suzy Menkes book from : the local public library. I noticed a : picture of a piece of jewel on page 47 (in : that book being published in 1985 under the : title of "The Royal Jewels"). This : piece of jewel as mentioned in the book is : labeled as "Fabulous Indian emeralds in : a girdle once owned by Maharajah Ranjit : Singh. It is in the Queen's possession : today." The picture shows a long : rectangle set in gold surrounded by tiny : pearls and perhaps tiny diamonds with : alternating emeralds from one end to : another. I don't think the Queen ever is : pictured wearing it, isn't she? I was : thinking it was a nice piece of jewels that : could be altered into something a royal : family member could easily wear in public. : For example, shorten it into a bracelet. : There are some other jewel pieces shown in : the pictures in the book which I do not : think anyone in the Royal Family ever wore : in the last 100 years. : : : : : :
