Absolutely no need to apologize. There are many different explanations and stories that surround gifts of jewelry to Royals, unfortunately, the Royals receiving the gifts aren't here to give the true explanation of the origin of the jewelry, however we have their ancestors and very noted jewel experts, many on this Board.

: My apologies Karenl. I should have worded my
: post differently. I was aware of Field's
: claim. I have no idea which version is
: correct, although the Royal Magazin site
: does refer to several sources and
: acknowledges Boffer's assistance below the
: information about the brooch given by the
: Duke of York. My intention was to highlight
    : the two different versions.

: Well, that may be true, I posted
: information that was in Leslie Field's book.
: Anyway, the bracelet is one of my very
: favorite pieces of jewelry of all time. I
: love it and if only a miracle would happen
: that I could have it!

: Karenl, there seems to be some dispute about
: who gave QM the bracelet. On the Royal
: Magazin site it is argued that it was a gift
: from the County of Cornwall and that the
: gift from the Duke of York was another piece
: which QM converted into a bracelet.

: Looking at your photo Alyend, I noticed
: that Queen Mary is wearing the Rose of York
: bracelet which was a present from her
: husband when he was Duke of York. The
: bracelet is made up of diamonds and rubies
: so the collar may be rubies. The photo may
: be of Mary when she was Duchess of York as
    : she is much younger.

: You're right, she received them later. Queen
: Mary received the larger ruby earrings now
: property of the Crown as a 59th birthday
: present from her husband. In the picture I
    : posted she's much younger.

: What an interesting photo Alyend. Thank you
: for posting it. I have never previously seen
: some of the jewellery HM is wearing.
: Before I start asking questions, I'll wait
: to see if other posters can identify some of
    : the items.
: I agree with you that the dark stones are
: most likely rubies and the dark gems in the
    : aigrette are black pearls.
: I also noted that the earrings HM is wearing
: are much smaller than the crown ruby
: earrings. I think that the King gave her the
: latter at a much later date.

: About the ruby dog collar, could it be the
    : one
: in this picture? Considering she's wearing
: the County of Cornwall bracelet, the
: coloured stones in the dog collar could be
    : rubies:

: I've found this photo just now, and I think
    : I've never seen the aigrette/tiara too.
: Considering the shape of the darker stones
: in it, I think they could be black pearls.

: Thank you Nellie. I have never seen HM
: photographed wearing such a diamond and ruby
: item. It makes me wonder just how many
: jewels she had which are unknown to us.

: Just rereading this for the use of the word
    : collar.
: I think collar refers to what we know as a
    : dog collar.
: See the entry for dinner at the Foreign
: Office. Brings this pic to mind -

    :
: I have just started to browse through the
: book Treasures from the Royal Archives
: which arrived in the post today.
    :
: From Queen Mary's dress book, 1911-13 it
: states, for Dinner on June 22nd -
    :
: "Pink & silver brocade gown Diamond
: comb ruby & diamond collar, large uncut
: ruby necklace arranged on bodice with
    : diamond drop added."
    :
: This might surprise some who believe that
: Queen Mary did not like rubies.
    :
: I wonder what that large uncut ruby was.
    :
: For Dinner on the 23rd at the Foreign Office
    : -
    :
: "Sapphire blue & gold gown Young
: ladies pearl & diamond tiara, pearl
: collar with Ladies pearl & diamond
: necklace under, pearl & diamond
: stomacher large round pearl brooch 3 family
    : orders"
    :
: I think "Young ladies" must mean
: Girls, and we now know Queen Mary herself
    : used the term "stomacher.
    :
: I feel a bit disappointed with the book
: because it is such a teaser, providing the
: tiniest snippets, as above. Perhaps no more
: than that was ever likely, but one wonders
: how and why the selections were made.
