I take the opportunity of this outing of the Cullinans VI & VIII brooch to divert the discussion on a different (though related) jewel: Queen Mary's "Delhi Durbar" emerald and diamond stomacher. Queen Mary had this impressive (and very "queen-maryesque" ) stomacher made in 1911 by Garrard's, for her husband's and her coronation as Emperor and Empress of India in Delhi in 1911. The Queen incorporated in it several of the Cambridge emeralds, including the Cambridge emerald scroll brooch, as well as the Cullinan V brooch and the Cullinan VIII brooch (without the Cullinan VI drop, which was at that time Queen Alexandra's private property and was inherited by Queen Mary only in 1925). On the pictures below, you can see that the Cullinan VIII is set between the top part and the emerald drop of the Cambridge emerald scroll brooch. All these elements can come apart, so that each piece can be used as a brooch on its own, or in combination with some of the other elements (for example, Queen Mary wore the Cullinans V, VIII and VI as a single three-tier diamond brooch). The full stomacher has only been worn by Queen Mary, though I suppose that Queen Elizabeth II inherited the full set in 1953, after her grand-mother’s death. I hope that the different parts of the stomacher (including the top part, which has not been seen on its own) still exist and still can potentially be reunited, if wanted. I know it is highly unprobable, but wouldn’t it be great if the Queen could wear, at least once (maybe just for an official portrait, if not for a State dinner or a gala ceremony), this splendid stomacher? After all, she has already worn the full diamond stomacher of Queen Mary (in 2002 for her Golden Jubilee), so why not the emerald stomacher now? She could even wear it along with the Greville emerald necklace, to fully spoil us and let us totally speechless for several days? Another (more realistic) possibility, if the Queen wants to play with her emeralds, would be to wear the Cullinan VIII brooch not with the Cullinan VI drop, but with the emerald drop of the Cambridge brooch, as on the bottom part of the stomacher. It would make a very elegant emerald and diamond brooch, don’t you think so? These jewels offer so many possibilities of different combinations, it is a pity that Queen Elizabeth II does not use more often this versatility.
