    King Erik IX's funeral crown in Uppsala Cathedral Archived Message

    Last Tuesday, 23rd September 2014, King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden visited Uppsala Cathedral, in connection with the General Synod of the (Lutheran) Church of Sweden. In the cathedral, they visited the exhibition ‘Heaven is here – Man and sacred art through a thousand years’.

    There, they could admire a mercury-gilded copper crown with red, blue and green glass stones, which is probably the funeral crown of the Swedish King Eric IX, also known as Saint Erik (c. 1155 – 1160), who is buried in the cathedral. The reason behind the name “funeral crown” is that it may have been made for the burial of Saint Erik in 1160. The crown is the oldest surviving regal crown in Sweden and the Nordic countries.
