I have retrieved the following from my notes, which contains the most intriguing information from Bury. It could be the diamonds from the loop that were converted to make the second side element to matech the other side element. George IV, when Prince Regent and King, seems to have loved jewels, and had a very large military button and loop made for a hat. [ A diamond loop was associated with the Diamond Diadem 1820, but broken up when making the Garter armlet for Queen Victoria. Ref: http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/eGallery/object.asp?category=284&object=31702&row=305&detail=about ] Bury has information on the diamond loop, and sometimes a button, that men used to hold the upturned brim of a hat. " Rundell's set 'a very large & rich brilliant Military button & loop for the Hat. with scrolls & knots, large brilliant star in the centre. a fine brilliant Button added with large Brilliant in centre' for the Prince Regent in 1811, using diamonds partly obtained from an Indian sword and a stud, some of which they re-cut and polished. Their total bill for the item was ₤124. The Regent wore the ornament at his great fête at Carlton House in 1811...... " Some of that description makes me wonder........ !!
