Hello Beth1, according to Leslie Field's The Queen's Jewels (pages 111 and 134-135 of the 2002 reprint of the 1997 edition), this brooch, described as "an enormous oval baroque pearl set in a frame of brilliant-cut diamonds", had belonged to Queen Alexandra. It was worn by Queen Mary when she was still the Duchess of York (so, it was probably a wedding gift from Alexandra, then the Princess of Wales). On this picture, dated 1895, Queen Mary (then the Duchess of York) wears the brooch pinned on the side of her corsage (along with the Kensington bow-brooch, pearl ropes and an unidentified diamond aigrette): Queen Mary also wore this brooch during the famous Devonshire costume ball in 1897. The brooch is here visible at the right side of Queen Mary's decolleté (on the left for us, at the base of the collerette): I do not have pictures of Queen Mary wearing this brooch when she was Queen. In 1935, Queen Mary presented this brooch to Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott, on the occasion of her wedding to Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (King George V and Queen Mary's third son). It is here in the middle of one of the boxes of jewels displayed at the time of the wedding: Unfortunately, I do not have pictures of Princess Alice wearing this brooch. The brooch was later given by Princess Alice to her daughter-in-law Brigitta, the current Duchess of Gloucester. The Duchess wore the brooch several times, but the only pictures I have all show the brooch worn as a pendant suspended from a diamond riviere: Banquet at the Guildhall in honour of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan: 2010: Banquet at the Guildhall in honour of the Amir of Qatar and of his wife:
