Black prince's Ruby in Imperial Crown. Knowledge that it is a spinel since at least 1935Archived Message

While trying to find information about the Hanoverian pearls, I read the following which is interesting for several reasons.
First, towards the end of the article it states that the Black Prince's ruby in the Imperial crown is a spinel. For some reason, I thought that knowledge was a recent discovery. Very interesting to know that this was known by at least 1935.
The second interesting item is the reference to earrings belonging to Queen Mary which are said to have inserts with portraits of her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Margaret! Try as I might, I cannot see Queen Mary wearing such an item.
I think this is journalistic make believe. What do others think?
