Beth - I can recommend the 2 volume "The Crown Jewels" published in 1998. It contains extensive history on the stone. Way back it had been described as "balas" which was an old term for a spinel. --Previous Message-- : While trying to find information about the : Hanoverian pearls, I read the following : which is interesting for several reasons. : : First, towards the end of the article it : states that the Black Prince's ruby in the : Imperial crown is a spinel. For some reason, : I thought that knowledge was a recent : discovery. Very interesting to know that : this was known by at least 1935. : : The second interesting item is the reference : to earrings belonging to Queen Mary which : are said to have inserts with portraits of : her granddaughters, Elizabeth and Margaret! : Try as I might, I cannot see Queen Mary : wearing such an item. : : I think this is journalistic make believe. : What do others think? : : : http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2394816?searchTerm=%22Hanoverian%20pearl%22&searchLimits=exactPhrase=Hanoverian+pearl : |||anyWords|||notWords|||requestHandler|||dateFrom|||dateTo|||l-advcategory=Article|||sortby :
