In the summer of 1901, during the year of mourning of Queen Victoria, Pierre Cartier was called to Buckingham Palace. He was commissioned to create an Indian necklace from various pieces of royal jewelry for the new Queen Alexandra, to wear with three indian gowns sent by Mary Curzon, wife of the Viceroy of India. Pierre Cartier was familiar with the Indian jewelry of the English royal house, which had accumulated as costly presents since the 18° century and had become the greatest collection in Europe. However, the jewelry which Queen Alexandra wanted to wear had been mainly designed for men and was therefore too stiff and heavy to harmonize with the fashions of 1900. For the first commission from the palace, the Paris designers created a light and elegant Indian-style necklace, comprising 71 pearls, 12 cabochon rubies, 94 cabochon emeralds. Alexandra was pleased with the piece and wore it frequently. p 155.
