I don't think we have ever seen any picture of this brooch showing another clear colour but green. Sometimes, the central stone might look darker, but it can be due to the lightning. But we have never seen the central stone looking frankly purple or blue... Besides, contrary to Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother does not seem to have been inclined to play with versatile jewels... And finally, on the following picture (taken at Ascot horseraces on 17th June, 1997), the Queen Mother wears the same brooch, the same dress, and probably the same pearl necklace as on the picture posted by Bryce, and we can see a distinctive green shade on the central stone of the brooch: So I guess it is, and has always been, an emerald.
