Unfortunately, because the Queen Mother had so many coats in a similar style, I am not always able to identify occasions by her garments. Nevertheless, I suspect that Bryce's image was taken in 1982 at the Epsom Derby, as the shadow cast by HM's face veil onto her coat seems identical. All the photos in this series show a somewhat opaque dark coloured stone. In contrast the emerald in the brooch we are familiar with is translucent and has a lot of life, and does not appear to change colour against dark coloured clothes. Even under artificial light at night the stone sparkles green. Then there are a few occasions where I cannot see an emerald, where the stone is relatively opaque and lacks life despite being subject to day light or good indoor lights. I had never thought about this issue until I saw the video of the christening of Prince Harry.
