Re: John Quinn's review of Karajan's remastered 1966 Missa Solemnis
I have always been a great Klemperer fan in recordings of this work. I also admit I have a very low general opinion of the Karajan 'phenomenon', based largely on his opportunistic behaviour during WW2 and afterwards. The covers of his recordings - saturated with large lettered prominence of his name, plus the glossy Hollywood-like photos, endeared him to me even less. I admit it has blinded me to Karajan's music-making. I am listening to this as I write: I take my hat off, what a stupendous performance. I am in total awe...And on the eve of my 70th birthday, it has also re-taught one of the great lessons of life, namely how carthartic it is to have one's prejudices blown away by simply allowing some light to enter one's closed mind.
