So true of Bernstein; his Tchaikovsky Symphony 5 with DG is a horrible gloopfest and that Bruckner 9 is decidedly an acquired taste. On the other hand, unlike Dieter, I love his Mahler; I think that composer can take his indulgence. It is strange that he is so likeable in Haydn, too - as far away from Mahler as you can get. His earlier Schumann symphonies in New York are lovely; the later set in Vienna lumpen - and so it goes. For me, the world-beater "Francesca da Rimini" is the legendary recording by Stokowski with the New York Philharmonic in summer drag as the "Stadium Symphony Orchestra" - stunning.
