Re: Das Lied von der Erde with Tenor and Baritone
I heard F-D do an all-Schubert recital at Carnegie Hall in 1965 and thought it magical. Of course, I was only 18 and had little basis of comparison--it was Schubert as much as the singer that so moved me. When I heard him do Die Schöne Müllerin a few years later, the magic was gone. Greater experience of other singers? Maybe, but I felt that the voice had coarsened slightly, and that gratuitous pouncing on significant words(a sort of madrigalism incongrously applied to Lieder) had increased. I still like the Schubert he did with Gerald Moore for EMI in the early 1960s and have a 1948 Schwanengesang in which the accompanist isless adept than Moore, but F-D sounds better and less mannered than circa 1960. I also still respond to his Jesus for the Klemperer St. Matthew Passion. But yes, he's to be avoided in Verdi and in just about everything post-1975 or so.
