Re: Das Lied von der Erde with Tenor and Baritone
Regarding Mahler's "sanctioning" of the baritone option, it seems that this WAS a little more than mere "giving of permission". I distinctly remember, when a teenager (a very long time ago!), a friend showing me in the score the places where Mahler had taken the trouble to write alternative vocal lines if the originals lay awkwardly for the baritone voice. I also recall, albeit with less certainty, that part of my friend's reason for showing me these parts was to demonstrate that DFD had actually ignored these "easy alternatives". Can anyone confirm these points? I was also interested in Ralph's "seeing little artistic rationale" behind the baritone option. It's always struck me that the contralto songs, with the possible exception of the second one, seem to convey viewpoints (or maybe attitudes) that are more "masculine" than "feminine". However, this is just a general feeling; I'm happy to hear them sung by either voice!
