In today's review of the Double-Decca of Holst Paul Corfield Godfrey questions the addition of woodwind to the normal strings-alone scoring of The St. Paul's Suite. This is some legitimacy in this by Holst himself. For the companion Brook Green Suite Holst indicates quite carefully in the score where and when some of the lines can be doubled by woodwind. I imagine this was simply down to practical/pragmatic use of the players available at the school. Although the St. Pauls Suite score does not share such indications I would imagine it not wholly unreasonable to think that a similar performing practice was followed. If that is the case it would be relatively simple to copy the kind of choices Holst made for Brook Green across into the earlier suite.
